Dr. Vermeer studied Biochemistry at Leiden, where he also presented his PhD thesis (1974) on the initiation of protein biosynthesis in E coli. In 1975 Dr. Vermeer was appointed at the Department of Biochemistry of Universiteit Maastricht, where he has founded the Division on Vitamin K. He is a member of the NWO working parties on 'Haemostasis and Thrombosis', 'Calcium and Bone Metabolism', 'Proteins' and 'Gerontology'. He is a member of the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, the Dutch Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis and the Dutch Society of Calcium and Bone Metabolism. In 1994 Dr. Vermeer was appointed as a temporary advisor of the World Health Organization. In 2001 Dr. Vermeer received the honorary title of Doctor honoris causa at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Iuliu Hatieganu" of the city of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Moreover, in 2001 Dr. Vermeer founded the company VitaK BV.
Dr. Schurgers did his PhD thesis (2002) at the cardiovascular research institute, University Maastricht on the role of vitamin K1 and K2 in bone metabolism and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Schurgers is working for the Division on Vitamin K Research. This Division forms an essential part of the Cardiovascular Research Institute CARIM, which is the largest research institute of the University of Maastricht. The work includes molecular biology, biochemistry, animal and human nutrition, pharmacology, and clinical studies in the fields of atherosclerosis and osteoporosis. He is a member of the 'American Heart Association', and 'American Society of Bone and Mineral Research'. He is a member of the NWO working party on 'Haemostasis and Thrombosis'. In 1994 Dr. Vermeer was appointed as a temporary advisor of the World Health Organization and in 2001 he received the honorary title of Doctor honoris causa at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Iuliu Hatieganu" of the city of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Moreover, in 2001 Dr. Vermeer founded the company VitaK BV, where he became the first CEO of the company. He received a post-doc position at VitaK in 2001 and was appointed as Vice President and Scientific Director in 2004. In 2007 he also became an honorary senior scientist at CARIM. Finally, Dr. Schurgers is also a board member of KEQAS, the world wide vitamin K external quality assurance scheme.
