Last week an invited review on the vital importance of vitamin K for public health was published in the American journal Advances in Nutrition 3 (2012) 166-173. In this paper we focus on the vascular aspects of vitamin K and its role in activating the vascular calcification inhibitor MGP. It has been demonstrated that in non-supplemented healthy adults MGP is incompletely activated, which forms an independent risk factor for arterial calcification. Extra intake of vitamin K may slow down or prevent the progress of age-related vascular stiffening. Population-based studies suggest that vitamin K2 is more effective in this respect than vitamin K1.
