GLA-proteins

At this time 17 Gla-proteins have been identified. Those the function of which is known all play a key role in important metabolic processes. The following Gla-proteins have received the most attention in the recent literature:

  • Coagulation factors with procoagulant activity: prothrombin and factors VII, IX and X.

  • Coagulation inhibiting proteins C and S.

  • Osteocalcin, also known as Bone Gla-Protein (BGP).

  • Matrix Gla-Protein (MGP), the strongest inhibitor of soft tissue calcification presently known.

  • Gas6, a cell growth regulator.
